Here is some of my new digital illustration artwork depicting military scenes.

U.S.S. Enterprise (CVN-65)

The USS Enterprise CVN-65, nicknamed the ‘Big E’ is the pride of the United States Navy and is the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. It is the largest naval vessel in the world and has served the Navy for over half of a century. The aircraft carrier is set to be decommissioned in 2013.

U.S.S. Nicholson DD-982

The U.S.S. Nicholson illustration was a commission for a sailor who served upon her and who spent over twenty years in the Navy. The USS Nicholson is a Spruance-class destroyer named for the Nicholson family who were a prominent early American naval family. Sam Nicholson was the commander and captain of the famous U.S.S. Constitution.

'Red Tails in the Sunset'

The story of the Tuskegee Airmen is an extraordinary one, both from a historic & military standpoint. They were a group of African-American pilots who valiantly fought during World War II. The Tuskegee Airmen consisted of the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group of the United States Army Air Corps. They painted their North American P-51 Mustangs red thus earning the nickname ‘Red Tails’. Movie director icon, George Lucas just released a movie with that very name to honor these men of the greatest generation.

Joe DiMaggio Illustration

Joe DiMaggio, nicknamed “Joltin’ Joe” & “The Yankee Clipper” was one of the greatest baseball players in Major League Baseball history. Dimaggio was a MLB center fielder who spent his entire thirteen year career with the New York Yankees. During his career with the Yankees they won ten American League pennants and nine World Series championships and DiMaggio was selected a #X MVP. DiMaggio is best known for his 56-game hitting streak in the early Summer, 1941 (record which still stands and likely will never be broken). He is among seventeen New York Yankees baseball players to have his number (#5) retired, which occurred on April 18, 1952. DiMaggio was elected to the MLB All-Century Team and into the MLB Hall of Fame in 1955. For this illustration I used a newspaper print filter to get it to resemble the old baseball uniforms of the Golden Age of baseball.

Jesse Owens Illustration

Jesse Owens, known as the ‘Buckeye Bullet’ was an African-American track & field athlete and one of the most iconic sports legends of the entire 20th century. Owens achieved international fame the world over by winning four gold medals at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany. He became the most successful athlete of the Olympics that year and an inspiration for many. The victories were even more poignant because Adolf Hitler had intended the Olympics in Berlin to showcase his Aryan ideals and prowess. Owens garnered awards and accolades throughout his lifetime including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1976 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 1990. In this colorful illustration I captured Jesse Owens proudly wearing his USA jersey with the Brandenburg Gate in the background.

Green Bay Packers Illustration

Just as Yankee Stadium is known as the ‘Cathedral of Baseball’ the same can be shared for what Lambeau Field is to football. Lambeau Field is the home of the NFL Green Bay Packers and opened its gates in 1957. The field was named for long-time head coach, Curly Lambeau of the Packers. It was the first modern stadium built for an NFL franchise. Before that, all NFL teams shared their playing location with their city’s MLB team or at a pre-existing shared facility. This illustration features the famous Lambeau Field with the Green Bay Packers three legendary quarterbacks, Bart Starr, Brett Favre & the up and coming superstar, Aaron Rodgers.

Bart Starr was a 5X NFL champion who played for the Green Bay Packers between (1956-71). He won the NFL’s first two Super Bowls and was elected to the NFL Hall of Fame in 1977. His #15 jersey was officially retired and he is one of only five Packers to receive this honor. Brett Favre was a twenty year veteran of the NFL who spent his career with a host of teams, but it was with the Packers that he will best be remembered. Favre played with Green Bay between (1992-2007) and is the only quarterback in NFL history to throw over 70,000 yards. Favre’s impressive stats include; 11X Pro Bowl selection, 3X AP NFL MVP (1995-97) and he was selected onto the NFL’s 90′s All-Decade Team. Favre won Super Bowl XXXI and officially retired from the NFL in January, 2011. Aaron Rodgers is continuing a proud tradition of Green Bay quarterbacks and is the current quarterback for the Packers. Rodgers is the NFL’s all-time career leader in passer rating during both the regular and post season. He won Super Bowl XLV and was named the game’s MVP, along with earning the title of the AP 2011 Male Athlete of the Year. He is the only player in NFL history to throw for over 4,000 yards in each of his first two seasons as the starting quarterback.

Richard Petty Illustration

When you think of Richard Petty the first thing that comes to mind is that wide grinning smile and of course his famous STP #43 racing car. Richard Petty, nicknamed ‘The King’ was a former NASCAR driver. He is one of the greatest all-time NASCAR drivers and the most respected worldwide motorsports figures. Petty’s star-studded career included winning the NASCAR championship a record seven times, which was only duplicated by the late Dale Earnhardt. He won a career record 200 races and won the Daytona 500 a record seven times as well. Featured here is Richard Petty with his famous Plymouth Superbird, complete with its signature shark nose fin and goal post fin.

Happy New Year to my followers and subscribers to my Steel City Artist blog. After a short holiday break and time spent with loved ones it was nice to get back to continuing where I left off and creating the digital illustrations. The first illustration of the new year was of legendary Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, Terry Bradshaw. Bradshaw was a 4x Super Bowl champion with the Steelers compiling four championships in only a span of six years during the 70′s. Nicknamed the ‘Blond Bomber’, Bradshaw was selected #1 overall in the 1970 draft out of Louisiana Tech.

The second illustration of the new year and this week is one of Steelers Nation most beloved players, Hines Ward. Hines Ward is an all-pro wide receiver & Super Bowl champion with the Pittsburgh Steelers. I created this illustration to commemorate Ward’s 1,000th NFL career reception which he achieved in the final game of the regular season on January 1, 2012. He became only the eighth player in NFL history to achieve this stoic accomplishment. This latest accolade likely cements Ward’s chances of joining a long storied line of Steelers legends into the NFL Hall of Fame. Since posting the illustration on Monday, it has been picked up by several Steelers fan pages on Facebook with several dozen Steelers fans using it as their profile picture which is pretty cool. “Born To Be Wild” Illustration

Here is a digital illustration I created for Harley-Davidson motorcycle collectors, enthusiasts and riders. The illustration was designed with Mount Rushmore as the backdrop scenery and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally as the central theme. The Sturgis Bike Rally is the world’s largest bike rally held annually during the first week of August. Mt. Rushmore is a national landmark in the Black Hills of South Dakota which was designed by Gutzon Borgham in the 1930′s. From the granite he meticulously carved four of our U.S. presidents which include George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt & Abraham Lincoln.
